Harau Valley

Harau Valley resembles a huge canyon about 150 m to 400 m wide, with walls rising perpendicularly 80 to 300 m high. The nature reserve has been a tourist attraction ever since 1926. The date and event are inscribed on a plaque found at the lower of the Sarasah Bunta waterfall, and bear the signatures of the Dutch Assistant Resident of Lima Puluh Kota Regency of that time, E. Rinner. And also two Indonesian functionaries, Tuanku Lareh Datuak Kuniang nan Hitam and Datuak Kodoh nan Hitam.

With almost 300 hectare in size, Harau Valley was declared as Nature Reserve in 1933 to protect the typical tropical mountain forest vegetation. The flora of the area is greatly varied. The most dominant plant species belong to the families Lauraceae, Fagaceae, Myrtaceae etc. In addition there are many other species of plants not as yet official listed.

Various kinds of primate can be found here. There are also stripped tigers (Panthera tigris sumatraensis), bears (Helarctos malayanus). Tapirus indicus etc. Among the protected bird species of the reserve are Agrusianus args, Driolus maculates, Buceros rhinoceros etc. In all, there are at least 19 protected animal species living in Harau Valley Reserve. And of course, all hunting in the park is prohibited.

At Harau, the lay of the land makes it little easier for the wardens. Aside from those who are really interested in nature, not too many people bother to visit the reserve. Most people who are interested in making a visit know how to behave in a nature reserve. And other visitor only as far as the tourist park on the valley floor. There is a lookout point at Aka Barayun, offering a magnificent view of the surroundings. Many young vacationers like to stay for a few days in tent on the adjoining camping grounds.
