Indonesia's Minister Of Tourism Opens Sawahlunto First Stage Tour de Singkarak 2012 with One Billion Rupiah Prize Takes Place

Sawahlunto, 4 June 2012 - Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Mari Elka Pangestu - accompanied by Vice Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sapta Nirwandar, West Sumatra’s Governor Irwan Prayitno and Indonesia Cycling Federation’s Chairman Edmound JT Simorangkir, along with Sawahlunto Mayor Amran Nur – officially opens the first stage of Tour de Singkarak 2012. The 77.6-kilometer Sawahlunto – Sawahlunto first stage starts in Taman Segitiga, Sawahlunto toward Silungkang, Sijunjung and Muara Sijunjung, then goes back to Silungkang and ends in Sawahlunto.

Minister Mari says that Tour de Singkarak is an interesting and strategic combination of bicycle sport event and tourism promotion, which is also part of the program at the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy to increase the quantity and quality of worldwide tourists visiting Indonesia, develop tourism destination outside Bali and special interest tourism particularly in sport events. Despite the world’s economic uncertainty and slowdown, the number of worldwide tourists visiting Indonesia during January-April 2012 reached 2,529,898 or grew 8.9% compared to the same period of last year. The growth is relatively conducive to the country’s tourism industry, in comparison of the around 4-5% global tourism growth.

This is the fourth annual event of Tour de Singkarak held in West Sumatra, and the event is not only a sport event with fierce competition to earn Rp 1 billion or around US$ 110,000 prizes altogether. But no less interesting, cyclists from 18 different countries along with their supporters, Tour de Singkarak related committees and public audiences will explore the beauty of West Sumatra’s panoramas that include cultural arts, culinary delights and local warm hospitality. The primary objectives are to win their hearts so they can bring remarkable memories about Indonesia to their respective countries and in the future they will take along their families to enjoy the beauty of West Sumatra, and to make these racers as the ambassador of Indonesia tourism promotion in their respective countries.

During the Sawahlunto – Sawahlunto first stage, Minister Mari has the opportunity to get around the town by bike, accompanied by West Sumatra’s Governor, Indonesia Cycling Federation’s Chairman and Sawahlunto’s Mayor. Minister Mari will also be scheduled to visit tourism sites of the renowned Gudang Ransum Museum and Lubang Mbah Suro. In addition, Sawahlunto’s government officials will attend various art and cultural attractions, among others are barongsai, kuda kepang, percussion and traditional dance especially dedicated to cyclists, media and officials of Tour de Singkarak 2012.

Tour de Singkarad (TDS) 2012 includes 7 stages with 854-kilometer total distance, via 14 regencies and cities in West Sumatra for 7 days, from June 4 to 10, 2012. Nevertheless, the participants have come few days before the event takes place. The event, which comprises seven stages, starts from Sawahlunto and ends in Padang. This time, the seven stages are Stage 1 of Sawahlunto – Sawahlunto, Stage 2 of Muara Sijunjung – Lembah Harau, Stage 3 of Payakumbuh – Istana Basa Pagaruyung, Stage 4 of Sicincin Anai Golf - Bukittinggi, Stage 5 of Padang Panjang - Singkarak, Stage 6 of Pariaman – Painan and Stage 7 of Padang Circuit Race.

The 14 regencies and cities involved in this event are the cities of Padang, Sawahlunto, Payakumbuh, Bukittingi, Padang Panjang, Solok, Pariaman; and the regencies of Sijunjung, 50 Kota, Tanah Datar, Kota Bukittinggi, Agam, Solok, Padang Pariaman, Pariaman and Pesisir Selatan. From year to year, the numbers of regencies and cities involved have increased from 4 in 2009 to 12 in 2011 and 14 in 2012. The future expectation is that Tour de Singkarak can cover all areas in West Sumatra. The amount of the prize also increases from Rp 600 million or around US$ 66 thousand in 2009 to Rp 1 billion or around US$ 110,000. In addition, the collaboration

TDS 2012 is enlivened by 250 cyclists from 18 countries that include Japan, Iran, Singapore, Australia, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Kirgizstan, Russia, Taiwan, the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, Brunei, New Zealand, France, Kazakhstan, Malaysia and Indonesia.

No less important, the increasing quality of TDS is also owing to the significant role of Amaury Sport Organization (ASO) as the official advisory committee. The ASO is the organization that also involves in Tour de France.

TDS 2012 is organized with the full support of West Sumatra’s Provincial Government as well as 14 regencies and cities that become the locations of this event. The provincial government’s participation and support includes the provision of prize competition, local media coverage, improvements of road infrastructure and facilities of start & finish locations and their equipment, banquets, as well as securities and traffic management, and souvenirs.
