Kerinci Seblat Nature Reserve

The Kerinci Seblat Nature Reserve is opened by Government in 1982 with it’s wide is 1,486,650 hectares. Administratively, it is located at 9 regencies; Pesisir Selatan, Solok Selatan (West Sumatra), Batanghari, Sorolangun, Bangko and Kerinci (Jambi), North Bengkulu, Rejanglebong (Bengkulu) and Musi Rawas (South Sumatra).

This Area consist of Nature Reserve, wild animal reserve, sheltered forest and limited production forest which have high potential value of flora and fauna. It is also functioned as a hydrologic in Central and Southern of Sumatra. This area becomes a conservation area paying attention by International Foundation.

Kerinci Seblat National Park is high mountains generally with topography and the mountain slope is steep; Mt. Kerinci (3,805 m), Mt. Tujuh (2,604 m), Mt. Seblat (2,383 m), Mt. Raya (2,543 m) and at lower part relatively has tropical wet climate with high rainfall is 3,086 mm per year, included Type A according to Schmidt and Ferguson, so rainy season are more than dry season.

Kinds of flora, fauna and ecosystem of fauna variation are representative Sumatra animals, like; Badak Sumatra (Dicerrohinus sumatraensis), Sumatran Elephant, Sumatran Tiger, Neophelis nebulosa, Tapirus indica etc. More than 10 kinds of reptiles, 6 kinds of amphibian. More than 6 kinds of primate; Siamang (Sympalagus sydactylus), Ungko (hylobates lar), Simpai (Presbyteis melalobates) and others. There are more than 139 kinds of birds, include of 6 types of endemic birds.

Located along Bukitbarisan Mountain, started from 200 m until 3,805 m above sea level. Structures of vegetation type are; high land vegetation (200-600 m), mountains or hills vegetation (600-1,500 m), mountain vegetation (1,500-2,500 m), underbrush vegetation (2,500-2,600 m) and sub alpine vegetation (start from 2,300 m above sea level).

Kinds of specific flora which have limited spread are; Pinus strain Kerinci, Harpullia arborea, Raflesia arnoldi, Amorphopallus sp, and at least 4,000 kinds of flora dominated by family Dipterocarpaceae, Leguminosae, Lauraceae, Myrtaceae etc. Flora at the top of the mountain is dominated by Fataceae and Ericaseae, meanwhile kinds of Vacchinum and Rododendrun are found at brush sub alpine.

Tea Plantation can be found at Kayu Aro, near Mount Kerinci. At some certain places in Sungai Penuh, Lempur, around Mt. Kerinci and Masurai can be found hot water source allies with river. The hot water has been arranged well and visitors can bath. There are also nature path from Muara Aman, Bengkulu to Muara Mandras, Jambi.

Places of interest at West Sumatra province are a nature phenomena and habitat of wild animals especially primate at Bukit Tapan and Mt. Indrapura which is a part of Mt. Kerinci. The location can be reached by land transportation from Padang or Sungai Penuh. There is a unique, where one regency is located in the centre of the National Park called as enclave area.

Ethnics of society of the Kerinci National Park area are Minangkabau, Kerinci, Komering and Rejang clan. Javanese and Sundanese people who have transmigrated there. Traditions of the clans can be a variation culture unique like arts, dances, costumes, food, crafts etc.
