Sawahlunto, 3 June 2012 - Vice Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sapta Nirwandar, together with West Sumatra’s Governor Irwan Prayitno, Sawahlunto’s Mayor Amran Nur and Indonesia Cycling Federation’s Chairman Edmound JT. Simorangkir, officially opens the big event Tour de Singkarak 2012 in a symbolic moment in Taman Segitiga, Sawahlunto. As scheduled, the next day on Monday, 4 June 2012 the 77.6-kilometer Sawahlunto – Sawahlunto first stage will be inaugurated by Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Mari Elka Pangestu.
Vice Minister Sapta says that the concept behind the event Tour de Singkarak is the combination of tourism promotion and sports achievement in the form of international bicycle race. The concept has indeed shown a good result. West Sumatra tourism has become more developed and visited by local and worldwide tourists. The event is deemed to have had positive responses nationally and internationally. From the side of organizing the event, Tour de Singkarak has from year to year been handled more professionally, be it in terms of participants, the involvement of country, support of local government and increasing number of sponsors.
Furthermore, Vice Minister Sapta adds that the strong commitment and outstanding cooperation from all parties are what make Tour de Singkarak become more than just an event featuring achieved cyclists. No less important, the event has positioned the image of West Sumatra as tourism destination which is reckoned in the international scale.
Tour de Singkarad (TDS) 2012 includes 7 stages with 854-kilometer total distance, via 14 regencies and cities in West Sumatra. The seven stages are Stage 1 of Sawahlunto – Sawahlunto, Stage 2 of Muara Sijunjung – Lembah Harau , Stage 3 of Payakumbuh – Istana Basa Pagaruyung, Stage 4 of Sicincin Anai Golf - Bukittinggi, Stage 5 of Padang Panjang - Singkarak, Stage 6 of Pariaman – Painan and Stage 7 of Padang Circuit Race.
The 14 regencies and cities involved in this event are the cities of Padang, Sawahlunto, Payakumbuh, Bukittingi, Padang Panjang, Solok, Pariaman; and the regencies of Sijunjung, 50 Kota, Tanah Datar, Kota Bukittinggi, Agam, Solok, Padang Pariaman, Pariaman and Pesisir Selatan.
TDS 2012 is enlivened by 250 cyclists from 18 countries that include Japan, Iran, Singapore, Australia, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Kirgizstan, Russia, Taiwan, the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, Brunei, New Zealand, France, Kazakhstan, Malaysia and Indonesia. As for Indonesia, the country presents 9 national teams, which are: 1. Polygon Sweet Nice, 2. Wim Cycle-Araya Indonesia, 3. Putra Perjuangan Bandung, 4. WSP Management Jogja, 5. Custom Cycling Club Indonesia, 6. Binong Baru Club/BBC Folker Pessel, 7. Tuah Sakato Cycling Team, 8. Cikeas Cycling and 9. PSN Gillas; while there are 16 teams from overseas, namely: 1. Aisan Racing Team, 2. Azad University Team, 3. OCBC Singapore Continental Cycling Team, 4. Genesis Wealth Advisers, 5. Uzbekistan Suren Team, 6. Antangin Eddy Hollands, 7. Action Cycling Team, 8. Plan B Racing Team, 9. CCN Cycling Team, 10. Colossi Miche Team, 11. Australian National Team, 12. Trengganu Pro-Asia Cycling Team, 13. Japan Cycling Federation, 14. Reine Blanche, 15. Mess Kerman and 16. Global Cycling Team.
TDS 2012 is organized with the full support of West Sumatra’s Provincial Government as well as 14 regencies and cities that become the locations of this event. The provincial government’s participation and support includes the provision of prize competition, local media coverage, improvements of road infrastructure and facilities of start & finish locations and their equipment, banquets, as well as securities and traffic management, and souvenirs.
