The Raid: Redemption

Broadcast: Thursday 22 March 2012 5:35PM - Set in Djakata, this is an action film exploring the Indonesian martial arts tradition called Silat. It’s directed by Gareth Evans.

Not the former Australian foreign minister, although he’s pretty feisty too. This Gareth Evans graduated from film school in Wales, went to Indonesia, met the martial arts master Iko Uwais while making a documentary and decided to translate it to feature film. Her first film with Iko, Merantau, came out two years ago. The Raid: Redemption, to give it its full title, is his second with Uwais, who plays Rama, the young member of a police special forces team sent on a raid to a ramshackle 15-storey apartment block ruled by a crime lord, Tama (Ray Sahetapy).

But they are expected and, trapped, they have to fight their way out, floor by floor.

Ultra violence isn’t my usual go, but I have to say I thought this was terrific.

Iko Uwais is a dream on screen—he’s gorgeous to look at, and charismatic. The camera just loves him, and he knows his martial arts. Indeed he was a national champion, and running his own silat school when Evans discovered him five years ago. The chief enforcer for the crime lord Mad Dog, played by Yayan Ruhian, is also a sight onscreen—he looks like an evil little monkey in a ponytail—and has some spectacular moves: like Iko, he is a silat champion and they worked together as choreographers.

But this film is superbly shot and directed. You get an authentic whiff of the decaying Djakarta back alleys. Beyond this, it’s so well paced, and framed...and I’d say Evans has learned a move or two from John Woo and the great Hong Kong policier directors of the 90s...and even earlier masters such as Kurosawa. The battle scenes which fade to near silence. The slow motion bullet. Etc

If blood and gore upset you, this film is not for you. But if you see it, you will have to recognise the artistry. It’s a real discovery. No wonder Sony has snapped up the world rights, and also the rights to a remake.

The Raid: Redemption makes Die Hard look like Picnic at Hanging Rock.
